Foundation Will Return to Apple TV+ for a Third Season

The upheaval in space will continue: Apple TV+ has renewed Foundation for a third season.

In a statement quoted by Variety, showrunner David S. Goyer said, “I’m thrilled Apple has given us the opportunity to continue chronicling Asimov’s pioneering galactic saga. This time, the stakes for Foundation and Empire are even higher as the Mule takes center stage, along with fan-favorites Bayta,Toran, Ebling, and Magnifico Giganticus.”

The stakes are indeed extremely high after the second season finale: one main character didn’t survive, and Empire is, uh, having some problems that it no doubt created for itself. Season two began, of course, with a very naked Brother Day (Lee Pace) fighting for his life, and it seems his problems did not exactly lessen from there.

Along with Pace, in its second season Foundation starred Jared Harris, Lou Llobell, Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, Cassian Bilton, Leah Harvey, Ben Daniels, Rachel House, Isabella Laughland, Kulvinder Ghir, Ella-Rae Smith, Holt McCallany, Nimrat Kaur, and Dimitri Leonidas. But given the huge time jump between seasons one and two—and the scope of this show in general—it’s not yet clear how many of them will return.

Foundation is based on the work of Isaac Asimov, though purists may find much to quibble with in the adaptation. There’s no word yet when season three will premiere.
